Primary Children's Hospital (Jan - Feb 2014)
I spent six weeks at Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah. It contains almost 300 beds and is the center for high acuity cases in Utah and some surrounding states. I spent two and half weeks with the oncology dietitian learning about cancer treatments, bone marrow transplants, and more. I then spent two and a half weeks with the Children's Medical Unit dietitian. She worked with a variety of cases, including all of the new diagnosed diabetic patients. I taught several day one and day two educations to newly diagnosed diabetics. I spent the last week working with the outpatient dietitians in the follow-up nutrition clinic. While there I did a case study on a child with Vici Syndrome, an extremely rare autosomal recessive disorder, who required home enteral nutrition. I presented this case study to the dietitians at the hospital and to my professors.
