For this assignment, I created three client handouts for dialysis patients which lists foods that fit into high, medium, and low categories for phosphorous, potassium, and sodium. Additionally, I created a one-day sample diet for a dialysis patient with calorie needs of 2600 kcals, fluid ≤ 1500 ml, protein ≥ 105 g, K+ ≤ 2000 mg, P ≤ 1300 mg, and Na ≤ 2000 mg. I analyzed the diet on ESHA to ensure it fit these requirements. I also practiced giving a dialysis diet instruction to my professor. This assignment taught me the difficulty of managing a dialysis diet and helped me understand the reasons for and importance of limiting certain nutrients when undergoing dialysis.
